AMCAN CROWNED MUNTING MUTYA

mutyangnoveletaThree Amcans raised the Atheneum flag high as they swept beauty titles during the Munting Mutya ng Noveleta 2008, Sept. 7.

Cher Nikki Ramos of Grade 2 Archimedes was crowned Munting Mutya ng Noveleta. Alexandria Bernadette Villarente of Grade 3 Edison won as first runner up.  Allondra Llanera of Grade 1 Galileo was named second runner up. They bested other contestants from different barangays in Noveleta.

The pageant included sportswear and long gown presentations, a talent competition, and  question-and-answer portions.

During the Q & A, the three Amcanians proved that they possessed not only beauty but also wit.

Nikki was asked what a child like her prays for. She answered, “I pray that I would do well in school and hopefully that I would win in pageants like this.”

“I would ask Mayor to give attention to the street children and help them go to school,” Alexandria answered when asked what she would request the Mayor to do for her.

Alondra was asked what she would do if her parents would not be able to support her studies anymore. She said that she would apply for a scholarship program.

In an interview with the children’s moms, they all expressed their joy and pride for their children’s achievements.

“We weren’t expecting anything, but to see that all the efforts we have exerted paid off was very fulfilling,” Mrs. Michelle Ramos, Nikki’s mom, added.

Mutya candidates were chosen through screenings held in their respective barangays all over Noveleta. Nikki, Ahbee, and Al represented Sta. Rosa I, San Jose I, and San Rafael III, respectively.

Every person has a chance to speak out what they want to say as long as they will make way for it to happen. This is what George-Edward Putong believed as he was featured on CNN iReport for supporting Barack Obama to be the next president of the United States. Not only that, it was actually his maturity and concern for the world that made him do this.

George is currently the promo producer of Studio 23 (a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.) Not only that, he also engages in video blogging. He has his own website, Digiputz.com. Recently he has contributed articles for Roam magazine under October 80 Publications and E-Frequency, an internal online newsletter for employees of ABS-CBN. He has shown interest in doing freelance work. Moreover, he is also developing a food blog out of his love of cuisine. Actually, George consistently documented his life through writing, photos and videos since 2002, the year when he graduated at Atheneum.

Back in 2001, he tried to put up a website for The Angles. However, it didn’t win the support it needed since internet was not yet a necessity at that time.

Even though he did not leave any lasting mark here in our school, he was proud because he was a close friend of other alumni who were champions in academics, sports and arts.

Sadly, George was a summer graduate in Atheneum because he failed Calculus. But this wasn’t a failure for him because he realized a lot of things in this experience. It didn’t make him weak at all. Instead, it taught him to never give up on his dreams.

His life outside Atheneum became more challenging for him. He graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism at De La Salle-Dasmariñas. His achievements in the university included his being recognized as an Outstanding Student Council President during SY 2006-2007, being the copy editor of the university’s school paper, and being a producer of the Alerto TV program. Moreover, he was also given a leadership award for his outstanding attitude towards the group.

According to him, we don’t always have to fit in. If we’re not good at something while others are, then that’s still good. One doesn’t have to be an honor student to be able to do great things. Each one has his/her own strengths and weaknesses. We just have to harness the talents which are given to us. Most importantly, we should stop pretending to be someone else.

SENIORS EMERGE DEBATE ’08 CHAMPIONS

The Senior-Junior rivalry was once again rekindled when they challenged each other’s wits during the 5th annual Atheneum School Debate held at the Alex Laserna Sports Center and Social Hall, Aug. 21.

Amidst the crowd of Grade 5 to Fourth Year Amcans, the two teams exchanged arguments in the proposition, Resolve: Capital Punishment be Reinstated in the Philippines. Ms. Diana Laserna moderated the debate.

The Junior team was composed of Crisostomo Luis Micua, Anelom Adriatico, John Emerson Monton, and Cinnamon Mae Salangsang as the alternate.

The Senior team included Katreena Aleda Samonte, Marcella Sintos, Ma. Clarissa Eirene Tinitigan and Missy Faustino as the alternate.

The Senior team proposed not only the implementation of death penalty but also the strengthening of the Philippine justice system. They further argued that death penalty would instill order in the country.

On the other hand, the Junior team argued that death penalty was not the answer to deteriorating peace and order in the society. According to them, convicted criminals should be given chance for rehabilitation in prisons. They also argued that life imprisonment or reclusion perpetua was enough. They emphasized that death penalty would only instill cruelty in the society.

At the end, the board of judges including Mrs. Adelaida Laserna, Mr. Patrick Bilog and Mr. Jun Salud decided unanimously that the Senior team presented a better case.

Ma. Clarissa Tinitigan of the Senior Team was named Best Debater while Anelom Adriatico of the Junior Team emerged as the Best Speaker.

Atty. Reynaldo Laserna announced in his speech that Atheneum will host a debate tournament and will invite 12 schools in Cavite. According to him, the idea was inspired by the fact that Atheneum bested 24 participants in the debate tournament organized by the Rogationist College in 2004.

ATHENEUM HOSTS 1ST PHILIPPINE PAPER AIRPLANE CONTEST

Paper airplane making is not yet a thing of the past. That was made clear when Atheneum School suddenly turned into a runway for paper airplanes launched in the 1st Philippine Paper Airplane Contest last August 30.

The Alex A. Laserna Sports Center and Social Hall accommodated 68 participants from various schools in Cavite. The contestants were divided into two categories: Children Category and the Adult Category. Noah Nidoy of II-Platinum ranked 3rd place in the Children Category. Sir Reneboy Samson, IV-Obsidian’s adviser, and Edrick Pilones of I-Amethyst made it to the top 10. Other participants from Atheneum are Ronn Villarante, Lawrence Liveta, both from V-Fleming, and JC Camposanto of VI-Dalton.

During the event, Engr. Enrico “Boy” Alvarez of Noveleta encouraged the youth to rekindle the old interest in making paper airplanes. He explained that it is cheaper to fly paper planes than to spend hours playing the computer. He also added that paper plane making creates bonding of children and even grandparents.

Gracing the event was Mr. Takuo Toda, president of Castem and Japan Origami Airplane Association. Toda demonstrated his own way of propelling a paper airplane, a technique that brought him a 22-second record, making him the World Champion. Toda concluded the event by flying three giant planes – paper planes that will be launched from space next year by Japanese astronauts. “I want to share the joy of creating paper airplane with many people all over the world,” the Japanese origami master expounded.
